Production Boats Are Built One At A Time:

just like custom ones…

So why are some hesitant about having a custom boat built? The basic process doesn’t have to be any more complicated than building a new one. Maybe it is the belief that volume gives production boat yards a large advantage in building a boat that works well. The truth is much of that advantage, maybe 30%, is eaten away by sales commissions, marketing, and other non-construction costs.

That money could be used to build a boat that exactly meets your needs. Oops, the problem word is exactly. If you want everything on the boat built to suit you "exactly", the costs will certainly get out of hand. The same is true, however, when building a production boat. "Exactly" can be very expensive. If, however, you can accept a good boat tailored to your own needs and cruising ambitions, equipped the way you want it, but without every screw individually polished, or bilge hose owner selected and approved, then a custom boat can be a great value.

But that's just my opinion.
