I’ve mentioned you can build custom boats for prices
competitive with production boats. Then why do custom yachts often
become inordinately expensive?
Extreme owner expectation is often one culprit. You
begin wanting a boat "just like this". Then there is the page or two of
specifics. No problem, but the project proceeds and those simple needs
turn into file folders and binders full of gotta’s: absolute necessities
to make your boat the best.
Yes, aim for a good boat. If, however, you are looking
for a perfect one, whether in design, equipment, or construction, then
failure, disappointment, or at least a much smaller bank account is the
likely outcome. As the Summer ‘99 Passagemaker said: "Keep It Simple".
Pick a boatyard whose work you like and then let them build the boat.
Don’t micromanage. Keep your lists (and goals) simple. Even if "money is
no object" look for good equipment and workmanship but prioritize which
parts and pieces really must be the best..
Consider this image. How much more would your car cost
if the manufacturer let you come and watch it being built? How much more
if they let you help? You can have an affordable custom boat, but it
will take your efforts to let it happen. Want to hear more? Call us to

But that's just my opinion.
