Maybe you should consider a custom boat...

Maybe not.

A common question I hear from prospective buyers is… "We’ve found a production boat we like, but instead should we really be thinking about building a custom boat?" My suggestion is generally the same. If you can find a boat, new or used, that meets your needs right off the rack; buy it. The truth is building a custom boat is not the right choice for everyone.

It is certainly a good option when you cannot find the things you are looking for in one vessel. It is also a good choice if you simply enjoy the process of creation. I have worked with clients who build one boat after another, clearly enjoying the construction process as much as they do the boating. Is it right for you? Have you built a home and actually enjoyed the effort and felt satisfied with the outcome? Do you really understand that any new building project will include surprises (some good and some bad)? Can you adjust to that inevitability?

Custom boats are not a escape from perceived high production boat costs. Sometimes savings can be realized. Generally, however, it is modest one that becomes nonexistent factoring in your time, effort and capital at risk. The real value lies in the collaborative effort of you the client, the designer, and the builder in attaining the custom boat of your dreams.

But that's just my opinion.
