Another year, Another round
of boat shows, Still can't find the perfect Boat?
When you
first started going to boat shows your impression was probably much like
mine. You were almost overwhelmed by number of styles, types and
options. That’s what makes boat shows such dazzling entertainment even
for those with no immediate plans to purchase. You know the ice cream
and stroller crowd. As you begin to look for the boat you’d really like
to buy, however, you’ll probably see a lot fewer choices.
Factor out
the boats that are too small for your kind of cruising or too big for
your wallet. Disregard the pure fishing boats, the macho muscle boats,
the pricey party boats and all manner of others. You will probably find
yourself left with but a handful of real choices out of the hundreds on
display. It’s understandable then that many leave show after show
perplexed because they "just can’t find the right boat". When you think
of it, the dilemma can be easily understood. Production boat builders
each have to build a product that they feel will be embraced by the
widest collection of potential buyers. The costs of bringing a boat to
the marketplace and advertising it are simply too great to target the
selective tastes of a few. As such each builder attempts to divine what
collection of stuff will make the most folks reach for their wallets. If
you can be amply served by that collection, these boats can be a great
choice.
What if you
cannot? For many it was the reason they built their own house, started
their own company, and don’t take prepackaged vacations. If this is you,
maybe the time has come to stop searching for a boat that doesn’t
already exist and instead create it. Custom construction can be both a
cost-effective choice and a rewarding option for those who see
themselves as more than just another owner of another Humdrum 45.
But that’s
just my opinion. |
