You don’t need a big Fancy Boat…

You just need a Boat!

Okay maybe your ship has just come in (figuratively). Yes you can now buy that glamorous SuperYacht. After all, what’s a few million dollars? On the other hand, you are more likely akin to the rest of us. Boating may be your big dream but money IS an issue – a Darn Big issue. The good news is the size of your boat does NOT equal the amount of fun you will have enjoying it. Often, in fact, quite the opposite is true. The bigger the boat, the more likely that operational issues, maintenance, cost and even crew staffing are likely to sap the pleasure, leaving little room for fond memories of some quiet cove or some wind swept shore.

While a more substantial boat is a plus if you are crossing oceans, the question should be… do you need to? Yes like many, the thought of casting-off lines and heading for deep water seems the great adventure. For me, however, that thought has tempered with time. While exploring foreign ports still remains an appealing dream, the reality of weeks at the mercy of the open ocean has lost its luster. The state of modern yacht transport, however, does not demand a choice between the two.

Yes everything comes with a price and transporting a vessel over distances comes with a big one. That cost, however, becomes more tolerable when you consider the things you leave behind. You may not need as big a boat; the same insurance, the mountain of fuel or fuel capacity. You may not need an experienced crewmember on the passage, you may, in fact, want a different interior or an entirely different boat.

Add one other extraordinarily important fact: the fact that a new world of cruising playgrounds becomes realistically available with just a little help.

But that’s just my opinion.
