                       Boat Shows…. Check!
                       Now What’s Next?

Do you sometimes get the feeling that you’ve become a professional Boat Show attendee: a marathon sport that lures thousands of unsuspecting boaters? It is an Olympiad event where the excitement of trekking aboard boat after boat is only mitigated by the aerobic challenge of taking your shoes on and off hundreds of times before lunch. “Will they be there when I get off?” Well the fun of boat shows is one thing, but what’s the payoff? It was supposed to end with the Hollywood image of you and yours cruising off into the sunset. Instead, the exercise is more often followed by brain freeze: dealing with decisions, which loom larger than the payoff expected.

Before I wax overly poetic, be assured that these reactions are normal. The solution: Damn the confusion… Full speed ahead! The truth is there are endless answers to “What is my perfect boat?” Unfortunately, most boat owners have never found them. So, you can ignore that conundrum. What’s left is a much more achievable goal. “What boat will I enjoy?” That’s the beauty part.

At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, I’d suggest a 3-point solution. Decide: 1) Do you want to go fast over short distances or slow over longer ones? 2) Are you cruising with your wife \significant other \ or with a larger troop of players and, 3) Are you happy with simple fare or do your minimums include rare tuna, hot tubs and designer finishes? The decision should be just that simple, complete in the knowledge that there are no wrong choices. Whatever happens can be rectified. Well maybe I am Pollyanna, but my suggestion, is as always, buy a boat and play, or my alternate corollary “Rent any boat and learn”. Remembering these basic truths get easier if you understand: a good day on the wrong boat is better than most other days.

But that’s just my opinion.
