American
Bureau of Shipping - ABS is one of the premier classification
societies. Based in Houston Texas this organization is tasked with
promoting safety afloat through the development and verification of
standards for the design, construction and maintenance of boats, ships,
oil rigs, etc. They publish many standards including their Rules for
Building and Classing Motor Pleasure Yachts, and Rules for
Building and Classing High Speed Craft. ABS also provides services
for reviewing plans and for construction of vessels in Class (generally
considered only for larger yachts and ships).

US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center
- The US Coast Guard is
responsible for the safety and safe operation of both recreational and
commercial boats and ships. All commercial vessels are subject to direct
review by the USCG, recreational vessels are not. The Marine
Safety Center website provides many links to the rules, regulations, and
recommendations that have been developed to assure such safety.
